Supporting Troughing Idler Sets and Confining the Conveyor Belt to Form a Trough

The core function of a troughing frame is to fix the installation angle of the troughing idler set (the angle between the side idlers and the horizontal is usually 20°, 30° or 45°), forcing the conveyor belt to form a U-shaped trough cross-section. This greatly enhances the material carrying capacity of the conveyor belt and prevents powdery and granular materials from spilling sideways during conveying, start-stop or turning operations.


Distribute Loads and Stabilize Conveying Trajectory

The frame evenly transfers the weight of the conveyor belt and materials to the conveyor frame, reducing the sag of the conveyor belt. Meanwhile, by fixing the idler positions, it ensures the conveyor belt runs smoothly along the preset trajectory and lowers the probability of belt misalignment.

Flexible Combination for Special Working Conditions

1.Standard type: Used for horizontal or small-inclination (≤18°) conveyors, suitable for conveying general granular and lumpy materials.

2.Deep-trough type: The angle of the side idlers can reach 45°, forming a deeper trough on the conveyor belt. It is suitable for large-inclination conveyors to prevent material sliding.

3.Buffer type: Buffer idlers are installed on the frame and used under the feed inlet to absorb the impact force of falling materials and protect the conveyor belt.


Model Selection Must Match Belt Width and Idler Angle

The width of the frame must correspond to the conveyor belt width: an undersized frame will cause the belt edges to extend beyond the idlers, while an oversized one cannot form an effective trough.The idler angle should be selected based on material characteristics: a 30°~45° angle is suitable for powdery materials to prevent spillage; a 20°~30° angle is for large and heavy materials to avoid excessive bending damage to the conveyor belt.


Installation Accuracy Directly Affects Conveying Stability

All troughing frames in the same section must be at the same height and spacing, and perpendicular to the conveyor centerline, with consistent angles of the side idler supports. Installation deviations will cause the idler set to tilt, leading to conveyor belt misalignment, edge wear and even belt tearing.


Regular Inspection of Structural Integrity

Patrol and inspect the frame for cracks at welds and reinforcing ribs, and loose bolts to prevent frame deformation or falling off due to load impact. Check for peeling of the anti-corrosion coating on the frame surface; if rust occurs, touch up the paint or replace the frame in a timely manner to avoid a decline in frame strength.


Overloading and Impact Loads Are Strictly Prohibited

The load-bearing capacity of troughing frames has a clear limit, and conveying materials exceeding the designed load is strictly forbidden. Buffer devices must be installed at the feed inlet to avoid direct impact of materials on the frame and idlers, which may cause structural damage.


Collaborative Maintenance with Idlers

Troughing frames must be used in conjunction with troughing idler sets. Regularly inspect the rotational flexibility of idlers; if an idler seizes, replace it in a timely manner to avoid sliding friction between the idler and the conveyor belt that may damage the belt, and at the same time reduce the additional load on the frame.

Key Considerations for Selection and Procurement of Conveyor Idler Upper Frames

1.Must be fully matched with the conveyor belt width, troughing idler angle (20°/30°/45°) and conveyor load class (light/medium/heavy duty); the inner width of the frame and the spacing of idler mounting holes must be consistent with the selected idler sets to ensure precise assembly and effective trough formation of the conveyor belt.


2.For conventional non-corrosive working conditions (e.g., conveying coal, sand and gravel), Q235 carbon steel frames formed by welding/stamping are preferred for their high cost performance.


3.For heavy-duty and high-impact working conditions (e.g., conveying large lumps of material), select frames with additional reinforcing ribs or those made of high-strength alloy steel.


4.For outdoor, humid or corrosive working conditions, select stainless steel frames or carbon steel frames with anti-corrosion treatment such as hot-dip galvanizing/polyester powder coating.


5.Pay attention to parameters such as the mounting hole spacing, installation height and overall verticality of the frame; ensure the frame is interchangeable and adaptable with conveyor frame crossbeams and idler sets from various manufacturers to avoid installation failure due to dimensional deviations.


6.Inspect the flatness of the frame mounting surface, the accuracy of the idler support angle (no deviation) and the firmness of welds (no blowholes, slag inclusions or cracks); for heavy-duty frames, confirm that the reinforcing ribs are fully welded to avoid deformation or fracture under load impact.


7.For large-inclination conveyors (>18°), select deep-trough upper frames (matching 45° idler angle) to prevent material sliding;For feed inlet sections, match with buffer-type upper frames (with reserved mounting positions for buffer idlers) to withstand the impact of falling materials;For telescopic belt conveyors, select modular or adjustable upper frames to adapt to the telescopic stroke of the conveyor and ensure consistent trough formation effect.
